Easy Scrappy Quilt

Scrappy Half Square Triangles and Squares Quilt, Easy Scrappy Quilt

You know I love an easy scrappy quilt! This one is called Scrappy Half Square Triangles and Squares. I’m not very good at coming up with clever names for quilts, as you can tell.

I saw a picture of a similar quilt on Pinterest and I was hooked. The quilt is fast to cut and fast to piece. I used low volume prints for the background and medium/dark fabrics for the accent. The design is all in the placement of the dark and light fabrics.

The block finishes at 16″. I used scraps of 2-1/2″ cut squares but you could easily use jelly roll strips and scraps to make the 4-patch and 16-patch units. Instructions for this quilt include it’s own calculator. Just enter the number of blocks you need and the calculator tells you how much fabric you need. How easy is that?

Rotary Cutting and AccuQuilt

The instructions and calculator for this quilt include rotary cutting and AccuQuilt cutting options. I used squares because I had so many of them in the scrap box, however, I could have used left over Jelly Roll strips and parts of strips to make piecing the Scrappy Half Square Triangles and Squares quilt even easier to make.

  • Step 1: Head over to the Design / Size a Quilt Calculator.
    • Enter the block width and length of 16.
    • Change the block setting by entering and changing Blocks Across and Blocks Down until you see the quilt size you need.
    • After that, take a screen shot of the results. They include the Number of Blocks, Actual Quilt Size and fabric requirements for the binding and backing.
  • Step 2: Go to Scrappy Half Squares Triangles and Squares quilt page with calculator.
    • Enter the Number of Blocks in the calculator and your results give you fabric requirements and cutting instructions for the size quilt you designed.

  1. I followed you here from Youtube; I love the quilt and have boxes of rescued scraps so this will help me use up some of that fabric. I’m thinking about using 3 inch squares and 6 inch HST; same affect but fewer blocks to make.

I’m also thinking about sewing it together in rows of 16 patch and windmill blocks instead of the block as you show it. I’ll post photos if I get that far… at this point, I have two quilts that need to be bound and another one that needs to be quilted. Never enough time. I love your channel and look forward to finding time to explore the website.

    1. Leslie, those sound like great variations. I do like making the blocks bigger to make them go faster. Hope you can share your photos with us!
