Use rotary cutting or AccuQuilt to cut fabric for this 12′ finished block. When set block to block, this block gives a secondary design.
This block is part of Block of the Day 2023 and is 0422 Starlight. Learn how to piece the Square in Square unit and how to sew mitered corners.
Watch the video below to see how this block is pieced. View the video on Youtube and you can download the block instructions from the description below the video.
Rotary Cutting
Squares and half square triangles are pieced to make this block. There are many ways to make half square triangles and many of them start by cutting strips of fabric. I recommend the Creative Grids Stripology ruler for this.
In the calculator below, the Two At A Time method used to piece the half square triangles. Fabric calculations should be adequate if you are using another method as well.
AccuQuilt Cutting
For this 12″ finished block the half square triangle and square units finish at 2″. Here are some AccuQuilt dies that will work: square 55059 multiples and (55709 8” Qube Shape 2)
Fabric Requirements
The Starlight Block is a 3 x 3 grid. In a 3 x 3 grid, units in each grid space finish at the same size. For this 12″ finished block, the corner, side and center units all finish at 4″.
Step 1 – For each block, make the following half square triangles.
Step 2 – With the remaining A patches, make one center unit for each block.
Step 3 – For each block, make 4 side units and 4 corner units.
