Using 4-Patch and Triangle in Square units, the Jelly Roll Scrappy Star block is perfect for using scraps or coordinating fabrics. The Triangle in Square units give the illusion of curves although there are only straight lines.
This is block 0728 Jelly Roll Scrappy Star and part of the Block of the Day 2023 Series of videos. Click the left side image to see the block video. Click the right side image to see the playlist.
Block Sizes
This block is laid out in a 3 x 3 grid as shown. Compare this grid with the block image above. Fill each space in the grid with a 4-patch or Triangle in Square unit that finishes at the same size.
Block finished size is determined by the finished size of the units. Example – for a 12″ finished block, the units finish at 4″.
The calculator on this page includes the option to select the block finished size of 6″, 9″, 12″, 15″ or 18″.
4-Patch Unit
There are five 4-Patch units in this block. Make the 4-Patch units using the strip piecing method. Results from the calculator below give the number of strips needed for the 4-Patch units. Use full strips or the equivalent number of partial strips.
Sew a light strip and a dark strip together lengthwise.
Sub cut the strips into the required size and number of segments.
Sew two segments together to make the 4-Patch units.
