Lesson 3:  Lone Star Unit

Probably one of the most difficult techniques to understand is the Lone Star Unit. Therefore we take one step at a time to complete it. In this lesson we piece the Lone Star units using the strip piecing technique. If you haven’t used this technique before, I think you’ll find it a great way to piece lone stars. We’ll break down the piecing into three segments:

  1. Preparing Paper and Fabric
  2. Paper Piecing
  3. Assemble the units

Preparing Templates and Fabric

Before we start piecing, we need to prepare the templates and the fabric. Glue fabric swatches to the papers (SS1, SS2 and SS3). Cut fabric into sections and stack in order of piecing.

Piecing Sections 1 & 2

Piece and press the first two sections.

Piecing & Trimming

Section 3 is pieced and pressed and the papers are trimmed for assembly.

Assemble the Units

The last step is to assemble the units. First we stitch all the SS2 pieces to all the SS1 pieces.

Next we stitch SS3 to SS2.
