From Squares to Star

I saw this technique at a retreat several years ago. I make a lot of Quilts of Valor™ from the fabric and scraps people donate. These star blocks are easy to cut, easy to piece and make beautiful quilts. The block is made from 2-1/2″ squares and 3-1/2″ squares. I use two square templates and a rotating cutting mat to cut the squares. If you have odd shaped fabric scraps this is the perfect way to cut those.

The block in this demo uses the same fabric for all of the background squares and the same fabric for all of the star points but also looks great with scrappy fabrics for background and/or star points.

Check out the From Squares to Stars Quilt Pattern + here and at the end of this article. $5 from each pattern sale is donated to The PTSD Foundation of America for Camp Hope helping Veterans with PTSD.

You'll need the following squares:

background squares

8 background squares 3-1/2″

StarBlocks2

8 star point squares 2-1/2″

center square

1 center square 3-1/2″

For each of the 2-1/2” squares for the star points, on the wrong side of the fabric mark a line across one diagonal.

marking the diagonal

stitch on the diagonal line

Using 4 star point squares and 4 background squares, with right sides together place a star point on a background square as shown above. You are supposed to stitch these together along the marked diagonal line but I got much better results if I stitched just to the right of the marked line. This is the perfect time for chain stitching.

Next you will trim off the corners as shown.
