From Squares to Star

A star block made from squares.

I saw this technique at a retreat several years ago. These star blocks are easy to cut, easy to piece and make beautiful quilts. The block is made from 2-1/2″ squares and 3-1/2″ squares. I use two square templates and a rotating cutting mat to cut the squares. If you have odd shaped fabric scraps this is the perfect way to cut those.

The block in this demo uses the same fabric for all of the background squares and the same fabric for all of the star points but also looks great with scrappy fabrics for background and/or star points.

Cut the Squares

You’ll need the following squares:

background squares

8 background squares 3-1/2″

StarBlocks2

8 star point squares 2-1/2″

center square

1 center square 3-1/2″

For each of the 2-1/2” squares for the star points, on the wrong side of the fabric mark a line across one diagonal.

Stitch the Star Points

stitch on the diagonal line

Using 4 star point squares and 4 background squares, with right sides together place a star point on a background square as shown above. Stitch just to the right of the marked line for much better results. This is the perfect time for chain stitching.

Next you will trim off the corners as shown.

Star block finished

Make 48 blocks. Stitch together 8 rows of 6 blocks. Add a 3″ border to make a 60″ x 78″ finished quilt which is the perfect size for a Quilt of Valor.
